Summer paddling hits different. Warm air, glassy water, that feeling of total freedom, it’s what we live for. But when the temperature soars and the sun’s unrelenting, it’s not just about performance anymore. It’s about protection, for your body and your gear.

At Aquaplanet, we’ve clocked thousands of hours on the water, and we know just how fast things can go from dreamy to dangerous when the mercury rises. Whether you're chasing epic sunrises or squeezing in a sunset session after work, here are 10 must-know tips to paddle safely, stay cool, and protect your kit.

1. Hydration = Performance

When it’s hot, you lose water fast. Sweat evaporates so quickly on the water, you might not even notice you're dehydrated, until fatigue or a headache kicks in.

Top Tip: Use a hydration backpack or stash two large bottles in a bungee dry bag. Add a hydration tablet or electrolyte sachet if you're paddling for more than an hour.

2. Paddle Early or Paddle Late

That midday sun? Brutal. Not only is it hotter, but UV levels are at their peak. Plus, the water tends to get busier and choppier.

Top Tip: Aim to be on the water before 10am or after 5pm. It’s cooler, quieter, and way more scenic.

3. Cover Up (Even When It's Roasting)

It might feel counterintuitive, but more clothing = less sun damage. Long-sleeve UPF tops actually help you stay cooler by wicking away sweat and blocking UV rays.

Top Tip: Go for light colours and looser fits. And don’t forget polarized sunglasses with a retainer strap, so they don’t end up at the bottom of the canal.

4. Sunscreen Like a Pro

Yes, even with long sleeves. Apply 20 minutes before you paddle and reapply every two hours. Waterproof doesn’t mean set-it-and-forget-it.

Top Tip: Use stick SPF for your face (less likely to sting your eyes), and don’t skip the back of your hands, ears, and feet - trust us, they burn fast.

5. Bring Shade With You

Planning a rest onshore? A quick break turns into a heat trap if you’ve got nowhere to hide.

Top Tip: Pack a foldable beach umbrella or a towel you can drape over your paddle for DIY shade. Bonus points for a cooling towel soaked in water.

6. Hat Up or Tap Out

Your head gets hit hardest by the sun. A wide-brim hat with a chin strap keeps you cooler and prevents that awkward peeling scalp situation.

Top Tip: Avoid black hats, they absorb heat. Look for quick-dry materials and mesh panels for airflow.

7. Know the Signs of Heat Exhaustion

Lightheaded? Nausea? Headache? Stop immediately. Push through and you risk heatstroke, which is far more serious.

Top Tip: Always paddle with a buddy in extreme heat. Take regular float breaks and keep cooling snacks like frozen fruit or energy gels handy.

8. Pick Shaded Paddle Spots

Open water might look inviting, but it acts like a giant mirror for heat and UV. Tree-lined rivers, forested lakes, and coves are your best friend.

Top Tip: Use Google Maps satellite view to scout for shaded routes or paddle trails before you go.

9. Dress Smart From the Feet Up

Deck pads can get seriously hot. While Aquaplanet boards use heat-tolerant EVA foam, bare feet on budget boards can burn.

Top Tip: Wear neoprene socks or water shoes for added grip and protection. And if you’re paddling with a dog, check their paws too.

10. Keep Your Paddle Board Out of Direct Sunlight

Your board hates direct heat. Prolonged exposure can weaken seams, affect internal pressure, and cause surface bubbling, especially with budget boards made from thinner materials.

Top Tip: When you're not paddling, keep your board in the shade or covered with a reflective tarp. Never leave it fully inflated in a hot car or on a sunny beach all day.

BONUS: Hot Weather = Happy Dogs (If You Plan for It)

Bringing your pup? They overheat quicker than you. Pack a bowl, water, and consider a cooling towel or vest. Avoid black decks and don’t forget their PFD.

Top Tip: If you’re hot, they’re even hotter. Let them swim, rest often, and check their breathing.

Stay Cool, Paddle Smart

Paddleboarding in peak summer is a vibe, as long as you're prepared. At Aquaplanet, we design boards that are made to thrive under pressure and handle the heat - but they still need TLC, just like you.

So next time the forecast looks like a pizza oven, remember: early paddles, smart gear, and shade make all the difference.

Stay safe. Stay shaded. Stay stoked.
