We all love a sunny day on the water. But while you're out soaking up the rays, your paddle board might be suffering in silence. At Aquaplanet, we’ve been helping people enjoy the outdoors for years, and one thing we know for sure is that strong heat can do real damage to your board, if you’re not careful.
Whether you’re brand new to paddle boarding or already spending every weekend on the water, it’s worth knowing how to keep your board in good shape during a hot spell. Here’s a simple guide to help you protect your paddle board from sun damage, over-inflation and other common summer mistakes.
Why heat can harm your SUP
Inflatable paddle boards are made from durable materials, but they still need proper care. When the temperature rises, a few things can go wrong:
- Air expands in the heat, which increases pressure inside the board. This can strain the seams or cause the board to warp.
- Strong sunlight breaks down materials over time. UV rays can fade colours, weaken the surface, and make the deckpad crack or peel.
- Glue and bonding points can soften, especially if the board is left in a car, tent or direct sunlight for hours.
- Salt and sand can dry out and damage your deckpad, especially when baked on in the sun.
These issues are easy to avoid with a few simple habits.
7 ways to protect your paddle board in hot weather
1. Keep it out of direct sun when not in use
When you're not paddling, try to keep your board shaded. On the beach, flip it over so the deckpad is protected, or place a towel or cover over it. Better still, store it under a tree, in a tent porch, or next to a beach hut.
2. Never leave it in a hot car or tent
Boards in a sealed space can quickly over-pressurise. If you’re packing it away for a few hours or driving in hot weather, release a little air. It only takes a few seconds and gives the board room to expand safely.
3. Rinse after every use
Saltwater and sand are rough on materials, especially when combined with sun and heat. Give your board a quick rinse with fresh water after each session. This keeps the surface clean and helps extend the life of your deckpad and seams.
Let it dry in the shade before packing it up. Rolling a wet board can trap moisture, leading to mildew and smells.
4. Use a UV cover
A UV cover or protective bag adds an extra layer of protection during transport or storage. These are especially helpful on hot days or long car journeys. They also help prevent scuffs and knocks that can happen when loading in and out of the car.
5. Don’t overinflate before you paddle
If you're inflating your board in full sun, stop just short of the min recommended PSI. The heat will naturally cause some pressure increase. Starting slightly under the limit helps avoid over-stressing the seams or surface.
6. Store it properly
If you’re not using your board for a while, deflate it completely and store it in a cool, dry place. A garage, shed or cupboard works well. Avoid storing it in places like lofts or conservatories where temperatures can get very high.
Loosely roll it rather than tightly packing it away. This allows air to circulate and reduces pressure on folded seams.
7. Check it regularly
Before and after each paddle, take a moment to inspect your board. Look for bubbles, soft spots, or signs of wear. Catching a small issue early can often save you from a bigger problem later.
